Hello everyone,

From 10 classes I have only completed up to 6. I keep failing MOB. I have not even taken 101 test What advise do you have?

Hi

You might want to try a private lesson with an instructor. It's not too pricey and you get 2 hrs just for you. I have been doing privates to get ready for my confidence sail. Sometimes in the group classes you don't get all the practice you need. Hang in there. You can do this!

Thank you Tracy for writing back much appreciate it. I did take private but still nothing helps. Each teacher is different and not sure what it takes to pass it anymore

Mariam,

It is probably a good idea to go out on daysails and also to get some other students (I am up to class 8 myself) to rent a boat and go out in the channel or out into the bay to practice, practice, practice.  My plan, once I get through the 103 classes and take the test, is to just go sailing with others at my skill level (and some who are better!) to gain that confidence and make some of the skills, like trimming sails, tacking and gibing, more instinctual and not things I have to think through before doing.

So, forget about 'failing' your man overboard training, the better you get at just turning the boat one way and then the other, the MOB stuff become much easier.

sorry Ben for late reply. I had crazy few months. Putting my head straight for 2019 and planning on doing all: private lessons and daily sails.

thanks for taking the time and giving advise

Happy almost New Year

Mariam-

You ever get this sorted?

I understand that each instructor is "different."  The ASA standard is what the book teaches (figure 8 method) is what you need to learn.  What I have found is if students really know their points of sail, this comes easy.  If they are confused in this fundamental, it only adds to the confusion during the MOB drill.

I emphasize to my students that sailing should be fun.  If it is not, you are doing something wrong.  The last thing that I would want to do is wind a student up or make them feel rushed.  There are a few instructors that teach that are passionate about sailing and want to see others enjoy what they have come to love.  The more you sail, the more fun it becomes because there is so much to learn.  Have you talked with Wendy Sharnoff?  She is an instructor in MDR and is very passionate about sailing and teaching others.

I can help you if you want by either pointing you in a direction or finding what would fit for your level and enthusiasm/willingness to learn.  There are lots of options out there besides spending money on private lessons.  When I was new to sailing, I wish I had someone to ask questions and had GOOD answers and options that I could pursue.  The difficulty is that a new person into sailing does not know the options that are out there.  A new person thinks that they need to take private lessons when sailing is best enjoyed (for most people) with other people.

Let me know if you want help and we can find a way to connect and give you other options that can help you get confident and relax as you sail.

Owe Derek,

Thank you so much. So nice of you to take the time to write back. I am a fashion designer So Sailing is bit technical for me but I find it to an artistic technical skill.

I would love to take on your offer to help out where to start. I wanted to start from class #4 again and see how it goes?

I am also learning/testing myself (just started) on https://quizlet.com/  for ASA 101 basic one...for now.

Thank you again for your time Derek,

Just to chime in and echo what Derek said the figure 8 method really works and I think you just need time on the water to practice it. It's pretty fun too, I have used to pick up free fenders in the water, trash and once to go back and look at a small seal I thought was tangled (it wasn't - just resting on kelp). Anyway it just takes some time and patient crew. You will get it.

Thanks Steve so much

I am planning on repeating the classes and go to daily sails.

My issues is that I can't do the figure 8 I need to do few times and get used to it before the test

Hi Derek - I am taking my classes and I am just starting 103 and also having similar problems to Mariam.  As Miriam mentioned every teacher emphasizes something different and has a different style of teaching.  I need a teacher that can teach at my level.  I need a step by step approach as to what I am doing and why I am performing that task.  It helps stick in my memory.  I have such difficulty with the tiller.  It takes time for me to register which way the wind is coming from.  I have to stop think and feel from which direction i feel the wind on my face.  It takes a while for me to process things.  I really do enjoy sailing and being on the water but i find I'm a better deck hand than skipper.  I have such a difficult time on the tiller since right is left and left is right.  I tend to just freeze when I am on the tiller.  It's easier to think of what needs to be done when I'm a crew member versus a skipper.  It feels overwhelming to me.  I'm really interested in any advice or guidance you can offer me. I

Hi Miriam - Have you had any luck completing your 103 course?  I would like to know what course of action you took to master your MOB and what you found worked for you overall in getting down the fundamentals.  It's nice seeing another woman interested in sailing.

Hey Adriana

I passed my MOB and realized the only reason I wasn't passing is because of the teacher making me nervous. The last instructor I had, Natasha is amazing . I loved her very much. She is cool/calm ... If you can take her classes

I sent you an email.

Hi folks. I just moved back to MDR from SF. I can charter any monohull in the fleet, and can sail mid week or weekend. I'm looking for crew. You can email me at ernest3302@comcast.net if you're interested. I've been a member for a long time. Thanks. Ernesto
